	Katie James
	Video + visual identity

Rehearsal Room, documents Katie James’ signature style of dance and was recorded at our first meeting, along with sketching Katie’s movements which helped to influence the final logomark. The logomark, which is reduced to Katies initals and test printed on silk twill further emphasises and captures the essence of movement which I was inspired by.
 Breathe, became the final film that premiered at the Glasgow School of Art 2019 degree show, and is directly influenced by Katie’s yoga practice. Developed to be a flexible site specific piece, it was projected onto the floor within the same dimensions of a yoga mat, using 3mm frosted acrylic as a screen, it was possible to view the film from different angles as the audience moved around it or across it.
Sound of breath supplied through head-phones, allowed the audience to become focussed participants, making it an intimate experience in an otherwise busy and distracting environment. This film also gave me a chance to art direct and style the final shoot.

	Logotype, animation + branding

	Festival of Ideas: Celebrating Ideas and Innovation, is a creative event that required a logo, advertisement and merchandise. Exploring how the notion of ideas and innovation could be translated, looking at things from a different perspective as well as the ‘Eureka!’ moment directed the outcome of this brief and how it may be applied. The animated logo is colourful and exciting, while the variety of colour allows it to be expanded into spacial zoning within the event, with each colour attributed to a different area of the festival. I&#38;nbsp;also experimented with projecting the logo and supporting information, imagining how it might be percieved in unexpected locations, away from being typically shown in print or on screen.

	On White SpaceExtended essay + visual essay
	
	
On White Space explores the influences of architecture over graphic design through researching a shared common term ‘white space’. The essay progresses through scale and time looking at both the poetic and functional meanings of the terms white and negative space. It covers a broad selection of work from graphic design and architecture, connected by visual art and looking ahead to digital spaces. The 100 page essay was submitted as part of my final assessment, designed with the research themes in mind and is bound in grey linen.
This area of study is of particular interest to my creative practice as it allows me to be open to many influences, both related and unrelated to graphic design.

Editorial
	Scottish Dance TheatreProgramme
	
	
Treating the book as a stage and theatrical prop, underpinned the approach to producing the programme for the Scottish Dance Theatre.
Using a combination of French-fold techniques allowed the photography to traverse over pages or, at times, hide between them, helping to create unexpected points of interest. To add drama, the images throughout were strictly treated in monotone with small bursts of full colour areas overlaid with a clear UV spot varnish to convey the exciting, tactile and dynamic performances by the Scottish Dance Theatre.

	Top 10 Tips for Potted PlantsType design + layout

	
Around the same time I was designing the typeface ‘Familiar’ I was introduced to illustrator and print maker, Esme MacIntyre. Collaborating with Esme was a great way to test out the typeface for her wonderfully colourful, short run book, ‘Top 10 Tips for Potted Plants’. We learned that we shared similar influences, with our respective research drawing on similar themes and practitioners ultimately leading to a successful and fun collaboration.
Esme’s prints are available for sale through her Etsy shop.

Familiar is a digital typeface created from memories of childhood, education and learning. Acting on subconscious influences, Familiar is open, bright, friendly and subtly exagerated in form with its roots in modernism. With its extended ascenders and descenders Familiar Regular mimics the learning process of writing. Ideally it can be used for display, or for colourful yet minimal body text. A physical specimen was created as a teaching tool to help explore the anatomy of type using materials not normally associated with typography further supporting the underlying themes of the typeface.

	Womens Type FoundrySide/sign project
Founded in 2019 Womens Type Foundry is a design and research based project formed with the intention of making the odd typeface here and there, as well as developing a sign painting and mural practice while sharing these skills through workshops. See our work in the wild at Salt Space Co-op.

	Snowflake: White on White
	GF Smith paper sample pack

	
Snowflake: White on White, was designed as a twelve piece-paper sample pack for a range of new white paper by GF.Smith. Associations that white has with purity aided the direction of this brief while exploring subtle printing processes such as UV spot varnish as well as vinyl application. Ultimately inspired by Inuit language and their many terms for snow, the paper samples where also of different shades and textures which perfectly displayed the subtleties of both the language descriptives and the paper stock. Through custom made packaging the concept and identity is demonstrated to celebrate this new range.

Tasked to create and deliver on demand assets for major programme campaigns across TV, player/partner platforms, socials, web and print reaching large national audiences, all in the blink of an eye is no mean feat.&#38;nbsp;As an in-house graphic designer I worked alongside creative producers, motion designers and directors showcasing and celebrating the variety of content STV has to offer.

Some personal highlights came from internal projects worked around the big everyday campaigns such as supporting our colleagues during the pandemic through film and messaging for ‘Wellbeing from STV’ and presenting R&#38;amp;D for a potential future brand refresh for ‘STV Children’s Appeal’, as well as providing art work &#38;amp; direction for some of STV’s top performing titles.
Working in a small team with tight turnarounds we delivered a massive amount of work while I was able pick up a bunch of new skills from my colleagues such as copywriting, storyboarding and a working knowledge of motion for TV.
